Back before the half term break, on 23rd October, Children from Dartmouth Academy joined children from other local schools for day of activities, competition, and learning at this year's annual Children's Day at Dartmouth Food Festival. Getting children together from the Academy as well as Stoke Fleming, Blackawton, Kingswear, and St Johns primary schools at Royal Avenue Gardens in Dartmouth was organised by the recently formed Kingsbridge Multi Academy Trust and supported by the Rotary Club of Dartmouth. Children participated in a range of activities in the specially erected marquees for the weekend's festival, including decorating cakes and baking pasties. Dartmouth Academy's PE team were also on hand in the band stand, providing opportunities for children to have a go on rowing machines whilst learning aspects of sports science. Also, seven Year 10 students from the Academy were given the opportunity to work with professional chefs from local restaurants to create dishes for this year's RIBI Young Chef competition, again supported by the Rotary Club of Dartmouth. Students spent the afternoon working with chefs from Kendrick's Restaurant, The Royal Castle Hotel, Sails Restaurant, Dart Marina, Anzac Street Bistro, The Station Restaurant and The Angel Restaurant in their respective kitchens, before convening at Royal Avenue Gardens in the evening for their dishes to be presented to a panel of expert judges. Competition was fierce and the quality of the students' dishes was high but there could only be one winner - and it was Keesha Noon working with Georgia Kendrick from Kendrick's Restaurant who clinched first place. Second place was awarded to Laura Peeke working with Ankur Biswas from the Royal Castle Hotel. Other competitors were: Morgan Shween working with Wendy Jones from Sails Restaurant; Harry Cheong working with Peter Alcroft at Dart Marina; Tommy Stewart working with Rafael Janas from Anzac Street Bistro; Yanira Rodriguez working with Tony Hooper from the Station Restaurant and Aaron Morrison working with Mike Trebble from the Angel Restaurant. Congratulations to all the competitors. Despite the rain, a fun and educational day was enjoyed by all who attended and the children are already looking forward to next year's festival!
