On Friday 28th November, three Year 10 Dartmouth Academy students visited South Devon College to participate in the Rotary Young Chefs Competition. Harry Cheong, Keesha Noon and Laura Peeke, who all study GCSE Food Technology at Dartmouth spent the day working in the College's professional kitchens preparing their dishes for the competition. The students had their work cut out, pitting their culinary skills against other participants from Churston Grammar School and Paignton Community College. Working in an unfamiliar cooking environment, the students had to adapt their recipes for working on very hot ovens. After handing over the finished entries for judging, the judges spent time deliberating over the dishes, all of which were of a very high quality. In the end it was the Academy's Laura Peeke (pictured above) who won the honour of being awarded first place. The judges were very complimentary about all of the students' dishes, especially Laura's and said that she had been very courageous to cook the dishes she had chosen as they took a high level of skill to get right. Harry, Keesha and Laura said that they'd had an incredible experience and had gained so much confidence in taking part in the competition. All the participants were presented with 'chef's whites' with their names printed on - and Laura was awarded a special brass trophy. After getting through this heat, Laura will be visiting Exeter to participate in the area final of the Rotary Club competition on 24th January 2015. The Academy's Food Technology Teacher, Annie Robinson, said that she is extremely proud of the students who have entered both stages the competition. Good luck to Laura and well done to all the participants.
