Design & Technology Curriculum

 

Year 7

In year 7, Design Technology Students will have the opportunity to undertake various projects focussing on core skills and foundation Technology knowledge.  Projects focus on mechanisms, working with wood metals and plastics as well as developing designing and making skills by the products they produce.  This will include learning some traditional manufacturing techniques as well as exploiting more modern methods.  In addition, students will be able to exploit Computer Aided Design (C.A.D.) by using Techsoft 2D design and Adobe software to realise some products. Students will have the opportunity to extend their work and creativity in their lessons.

 

Year 8

In year 8, Design Technology students will have the opportunity to build on and develop their skills from year 7 and will undertake several focussed practical projects which allow them to develop their creative abilities and subject knowledge.  Projects include making jewellery, a moving model and a laser cut acrylic product.  Again, students will be working with a range of card, plastic wood and metal materials.  This allows students to develop new skills including more familiarity with key C.A.D. software and Computer Aided Manufacture (C.A.M.) processes.  This will allow students to make an informed option choice if they decide to undertake a Design Technology GCSE.

 

Year 9

As an introduction to their GCSE course students will begin to follow closely the Design Process.  This will include developing projects in line with the Technology GCSE controlled assessment format.  In addition to several foundation design and make projects, including making wooden bookends, a metal balancing toy and an acrylic product, students will also be studying Technical Drawing skills.  Familiarity and skill development in previously used software is built upon and students are introduced to new 3D modelling software called Solidworks.

 

Year 10

In year 10, Design Technology students will undertake more rigorous project formats which are intended to exploit existing skills and knowledge as well as consolidating key subject topics.  Students will investigate key Designers, work with some new materials, including smart materials, and produce more complex, creative products.  These include designing and manufacturing a laser cut acrylic phone stand and producing a product utilising traditional wood working techniques.  At Easter in Year 10 students will undertake their DT Controlled assessment project which counts towards 60% of their GCSE.   Task choices are directed from the exam board and will challenge students to manufacture a high quality product and submit a comprehensive design portfolio.

 

Year 11

Year 11 students will progress with their chosen controlled assessment GCSE project started in year 10.  This will involve developing and modelling their project, both physically and by using 3D modelling software (solidworks) as well as planning and manufacturing their product for real.  This will involve specifying relevant materials and processes which are recorded in their design portfolio.   By Christmas in Year 11, GCSE coursework should be completed and students then have sufficient time to begin revising for both their mock exam and their summer GCSE exam.  The revision schedule is comprehensive and consists of exam practice, consolidation of theory knowledge, some small focussed practical revision mini-projects as well as the opportunity to hopefully have some experience of Industrial Practices and visits to real life manufacturers and designers.  These opportunities are intended to allow students to sit their GCSE summer exam confident that their skills and subject knowledge will afford them the best opportunity for GCSE success.
