Recognition of all-through Academy by South West Commissioner for Schools

Sir David Carter, South West Commissioner for Schools visited Dartmouth Academy on Thursday 2nd October and after his visit, he took to the popular social media site, Twitter, commenting that the Academy is “one of the best models of an all-through academy structure I have seen. One complete school not 2 co-located.

”Sir David took up this new role for the Department for Education in September, making him the education lead for the department across the region.

As a former Headteacher in Bristol, where he led the Cabot Learning Foundation he has spent most of the first month of his new role visiting schools across the area, finding out what is special about the South West and what needs to be done to raise standards so that young people here achieve as well as anywhere else in the country.

Nick Hindmarsh, Dartmouth Academy Principal said, “It was really refreshing to meet Sir David and to hear his views on the South West and how he sees his role. The holistic approach he is obviously taking to judge a school is very welcome and, I hope, a foretaste of things to come from national as well as regional government.

“It is also good to know that the time we have spent designing a genuine all-through school has been recognised.

”Sir David has said he would like to come and spend more time looking around and getting to know us better.
