Careers Day

On Wednesday 25th November, Dartmouth Academy held its annual Careers Day which involved all students from Year 7 to 6th Form. The main Careers Fair was held in the Library which students visited throughout the day.

The exhibitors all brought information for students to find out more about educational opportunities after Year 11, as well as employment routes beyond higher and further education. There was a mix of exhibitors from local employers such as Dartmouth Steam Railway and River Boat Company, Ribeye Boats both of whom offer apprenticeships, to the local colleges like Bicton Agricultural College to Higher education establishments like Plymouth University and Marjons the sports university, to Cardiff Metropolitan University all of which have a number of former Academy 6th formers studying sports and arts related degrees. The armed forces were also represented and as usual were as popular as ever.

As well as the main Careers Fair, Year 11 students were preparing and having their 1 to 1 mock interviews with outside business people and employers. The interviews provided an opportunity for students to gain first-hand experience of going through the job interview process. The interviewers were very impressed with the confidence of the students and gave them feedback on how they could improve for the future. Students got a real buzz from the day. Yanira who was extremely nervous before hand, later said how pleased she was that she had gone through with the interview and how nice the lady was that had interviewed her and made her feel at ease.

On behalf of the Academy Tina Graham, Acting Principal extends an extreme thank you to all those who interviewed, including the local Rotarians who gave up their day to be part of the experience. This day has contributed to the rich experience to all students and is an essential part of their preparation for the future.36

Year 7, 8 and 9 did activities related to the world of work and all students presented their findings at the end of the day to their year groups.

Once again our students did The Academy proud with their eagerness to find out more information about careers and their politeness towards the exhibitors and interviewers. Mandy Pigott who organised the event said, “Our students always amaze me with their willingness to engage with these types of activity days. The buzz around the Academy during the day just shows their willingness to learn more.”
