Dartmouth Caring Lunch

On Friday 4th of December hundreds of potatoes were peeled, tables were beautifully decorated with handmade lanterns, and Christmas carols were ringing out across the school. A fun and festive day took place for the annual Dartmouth Caring lunch at Dartmouth Academy. Students worked together to produce a delicious roast dinner with all the trimmings, traditional Christmas pudding and mince pies, followed by tea, coffee and chocolates for those who had any room left! Students were involved from start to finish, from peeling and preparing the vegetables, right through to the washing up. They laid the tables with paper lanterns and Christmas crackers, served lunch to their guests, and were on hand to ensure that everyone was being well looked after and of course, had enough gravy! Food technology teacher Annie Robinson said “Students have put in 100% effort in every aspect. They have acquitted themselves exceptionally well”.

The event is something that students really enjoy being involved with. Year 9 student James Farmsworth said “It’s great to be part of something which helps the older generation to get out and do something fun and a bit different”. Entertainment was provided by School Choir, who sang a selection of Christmas Carols including ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ and ‘Come All Ye Faithful’. We also heard from the GCSE Rock Band who performed and excellent rendition of “I wish it could be Christmas every day” by Wizard and ‘Merry Xmas Everybody’ by Slade. This was followed by a beautiful piano solo’s from Year 11 students Paulina and Harriet. Music teacher Anthony Chamberlain said “Students have been rehearsing their performances since September during lunch and break times as well as in lessons. It’s fantastic to see their passion for music being utilised for such a good cause”.

Members of Dartmouth Caring commented on the politeness of the students and how impressed they were with the musical talents at the Academy. Acting Principal Tina Graham said “I’m incredibly proud of all the hard work that our students have put into making today a real success and an enjoyable event for everyone involved.”

We look forward to welcoming our friends from Dartmouth Caring back again next year.
